Support for national funding applications

When applying for funding from Swedish research funding bodies, support is available at multiple levels. Your department is often your first stop for help with budgets, administrative questions and internal procedures. Some applications also require support from the University centrally, especially when it comes to nomination processes and commitment letters from the Vice-Chancellor.

Plan your budget and arrange certificates

Contact your department’s financial administrator as early as possible to receive support producing a budget. Many funding organisations require co-financing or specific cost estimates, and it is important that your department supports and commits to your application.

If your application requires a commitment letter, certificate or nomination from the University centrally, the project’s budget will also need to be reviewed and approved by the Research Support and Collaboration Office. Contact rso@umu.se well in advance of the application deadline.

Use the right certificates and templates

Before you can submit your application, you need to make sure you have all the necessary certificates. Major applications often require a head of department’s certificate confirming that

  • the department is committed to providing any joint funding and co-funding;
  • you have the necessary resources to conduct the project.

Develop your application

Would you like to discuss a new research idea, get help with a draft or work on an application that was rejected? Book an appointment with the online application workshop. The application workshop can help you develop your application to major research funding organisations, such as Formas, Forte and the Swedish Research Council.

Receive feedback on your application

If you have a more complete application and would like it reviewed, contact the Research Support and Collaboration Office directly. They can provide feedback and suggestions for improvements on applications, primarily to government research funding bodies.

Book a meeting or submit your application via rso@umu.se, and a research coordinator will contact you.

Applying for grants requiring a nomination

Some funding bodies, such as the Wallenberg Foundations, require an internal nomination process at the higher education institution. In these cases, the Research Support and Collaboration Office coordinates arranging the commitment letter and the Vice-Chancellor’s signature.

The format of the nomination process depends on both the funding organisation and the faculty. Contact your faculty for information about internal deadlines, relevant assessment criteria, and a list of documents you need to submit.
