This is included in the agreement
The open access publishing fee (APC, article processing charge) has been pre-paid through an agreement between the library and the publisher. The agreement applies when the corresponding author (i.e., the one handling communication with the publisher and journal) is affiliated with Umeå University.
The agreement does not cover additional charges, such as page charges or charges for colour illustrations.
The agreement applies to articles submitted to the publisher in 2024 or 2025 (“submitted date” during 2024-2025).
Publication types
Article types covered by the agreement include “data in brief”, “full-length article”, “insights”, “micro-article”, “original software publication”, “protocols”, “review article”, “short communication”, “short review”, and “video article”.
Choice of licence
Articles covered by the agreement are published with a CC BY licence.
Included journals
The agreement applies to open access publishing in a large number of hybrid journals in the Science Direct Freedom Collection and Cell Press, as well as in Elsevier’s open access journals. The list of included journals will be subject to minor changes. Use the search function on the Elsevier website for the latest updated information on journals included in the agreement.
The agreement does not include the Lancet family hybrid journals (The Lancet, Lancet Infectious Diseases, Lancet Neurology, and Lancet Oncology).
Extra charges for Cell Press journals
Cell Press charges an additional handling fee, which is not included in the contract. As the author, you are responsible for covering this cost yourself.
Titles with a handling fee
At present, Cell Press charges handling fees for the following titles:
- The American Journal of Human Genetics;
- Biophysical Journal;
- Molecular Plant; and
- Molecular Therapy.
Please note that there may be changes to which Cell Press journals are covered by the handling fee, meaning that the additional cost could be charged for more journals that are part of Cell Press.
What you need to do
To be covered by the agreement, you must:
- be the corresponding author;
- state a correct affiliation to Umeå University in the manuscript; and
- state Umeå University as your primary affiliation in the publisher submission system.
We recommend that you use your email address ending in umu.se, which simplifies identification of your Umeå University affiliation.
Good to know about the publishing process
Once your manuscript has been accepted, the publisher will email you a link to finalise the publication.
- Fill out the form “Rights and Access information”. Make sure you select Umeå University as your affiliation.
- Approve the publishing option Gold Open Access, “Publish as an Open Access article”.
- Choose a Creative Commons licence.
- Approve the publishing agreement.
