You get a discount on the publishing fee
The publishing fee (APC, article processing charge) is discounted via an agreement between the library and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). The price depends on when you want the article to be made openly available:
- If you choose to publish with immediate open access, you will get a discount on the publishing fee and pay $5,495 (full price $5,995). You can choose between a CC BY licence and a CC BY-NC-ND licence.
- If you choose to publish with delayed open access, you pay the standard price of $2,945. Your article will be published under a CC BY-NC-ND licence and will not be made openly available until six months after the publication date.
What you need to do
To be covered by the agreement, you must:
- be the corresponding author (i.e., the one handling communication with the publisher and journal);
- state a correct affiliation to Umeå University in the manuscript; and
- state Umeå University as your primary affiliation in the publisher submission system.
Good to know about the publishing process
As long as you select Umeå University as your primary affiliation when submitting your manuscript, the publisher will automatically identify your affiliation and apply the discount. Read more about the publishing process at the PNAS website:

Always check the terms and conditions
It is crucial that you review the terms and conditions on the website of both the publisher and the journal in which you choose to publish.
