Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS)

Umeå University researchers can publish open access at a discount in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). This page provides more information about the terms of the publishing agreement for 2026 and what it means for you.

You get a discount on the publishing fee

The publishing fee (APC, article processing charge) is discounted via an agreement between the Library and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). The price depends on when you want the article to be made openly accessible:

  • If you choose to publish with immediate open access, you will get a discount on the publishing fee and pay USD 5,495 (full price is USD 5,995). You can choose between a CC BY licence and a CC BY-NC-ND licence.
  • If you choose to publish with delayed open access, you pay the standard price of USD 2,945. Your article will be published under a CC BY-NC-ND licence and will not be made openly accessible until six months after the publication date.

The agreement applies to articles accepted by the publisher in 2025 or 2026 (“acceptance date” in 2025–2026).

Article types covered by the agreement include "research reports”, "brief reports”, "letters to the editor” and "opinions".

What you need to do

To use the agreement, you must:

•    be the corresponding author;
•    state a correct affiliation to Umeå University in the manuscript;
•    state Umeå University as your primary affiliation in the publisher submission system.

For the publisher to identify you as affiliated to Umeå University, you should use your university email address ending in @umu.se.

Good to know about the publishing process

As long as you select Umeå University as your primary affiliation when submitting your manuscript, the publisher will automatically identify your affiliation and apply the a discount on the publishing fee.
