Before printing your thesis, you need to do the following:
- Order the ISBN from the library.
- Order the ISSN and possibly a serial number if your thesis is to be included in a series. Contact the issuing department or faculty.
- Apply for permission from any copyright holders for material included in the thesis. If you have published composite papers, you need permission from the publisher to include a work in the printed thesis.
Register your thesis in DiVA
You must register and upload your doctoral thesis in DiVA no later than three days before the date of your public posting. Posting occurs when the thesis is publicly published in DiVA.
If you have written a licentiate thesis, you must register it before your licentiate seminar.
Choose the appropriate manual based on the type of thesis you have written. If your thesis contains composite papers, you should choose the manual for a compilation thesis. In this case, you only upload the summary to DiVA.

Register an artistic thesis
Artistic theses vary in format and presentation and may contain parts that do not take the form of a traditional, usually text-based, thesis. They often have content that requires special solutions in connection with registration in DiVA. Contact the library for guidance.
Submit printed copies to the library
You are required to submit three physical copies of your doctoral thesis to the library by your date of public posting. Each copy is to include a notification of submission of a doctoral thesis (spikblad).
If you have written a licentiate thesis that is published in printed format, you must submit a physical copy of the thesis to the library.
When submitting these required copies, you can
- drop them off at the information counter at the University Library;
- give them to library staff in connection with a public posting ceremony (bring another copy to nail to the board);
- ask someone else to submit them for you;
- send by post to Umeå University Library, SE-901 74 Umeå.
