Perception, comprehension and projection (PercomPro) - evaluation of situation awareness in multidisciplinary emergency care teams
A deeper understanding and analysis of situation awareness has reduced the incidence of mistakes which occur in complex environments such as aviation and nuclear industries. There, as in health care, unexpected events ends up with major consequences if wrong decisions are made. With experience from the aviation and nuclear industries my thesis will focus on the interaction between the participants in multidisciplinary teams working with severely injured and sick patients.
The study will therefore contribute to patient safety by optimizing further education and team training for personnel working in stressful complex environment. I am a part of a research group that evaluates situational awareness, the team's perception in the current situation, how they comprehend the situation and how they project future status of the patient. This will be evaluated in an intervention study which will be the basis for my thesis. Our hypothesis is that training in crisis resource management and situational awareness will improve team performance regarding leadership, communication, team work and situation awareness. The intervention also includes video supported reflection on self and team function.
Team work and the work environment is a prioritized and selected area of the National Board.
Hence, we look forward to having in-depth knowledge of situation awareness to analyze where in the care of the trauma patient errors and mistakes occurs.
