I am a university lecturer at the Department of Nursing, Campus Örnsköldsvik, and have a PhD in medical science with a focus on sexual and reproductive health.
My name is Katharina Tjernström and I am employed as a university lecturer at the Department of Nursing, Campus Örnsköldsvik. In November 2025, I defended my thesis 'Beyond the obstetric gaze' on the unseen and multifaceted long-term consequences of severe perineal trauma for women's health and working lives.
I obtained my degree of Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Umeå university in 2008 and have clinical experience as a registered nurse from internal medicine and psychiatry. Additionally, I am a registered midwife with clinical experience from intrapartum and postpartum inpatient care as well as gynecological inpatient care. I obtained my Postgraduate Diploma in Midwifery in 2012 at Högskolan Dalarna and have also a Degree of Master of Science in Caring Science.
My teaching is mainly based in the nursing programme and at the advanced level in the midwifery programme.

I have experience of teaching and practical examinations at clinical training centres in various skills within the nursing and midwifery fields, such as central access, injections, resuscitation and suturing of perineal trauma. I also give lectures, seminars and examinations in nursing and sexual and reproductive health. I am a clinical teacher, supervise bachelor and master students and am also responsible for courses in the midwifery programme. Between 2019 and 2023, I was responsible for Umeå University's clinical training centre at Örnsköldsvik Hospital.
