I am Associate Professor and Senior Lecturer in Sociology, and Head of unit at Centre for Demographic and Ageing Research (CEDAR).
My research concerns historical demography, with a focus on women's and children's health over time. A central theme is the development of maternity care and how medical, social, and institutional changes have shaped the conditions of childbirth and the outcomes for mothers and newborns.
Another area of my research examines the connections between climate variations, extreme weather events, and population health, with particular attention to how vulnerable groups have historically been affected by climate-related stressors.
A further research focus involves the geographical spread of epidemics and diseases, as well as differences between urban and rural areas.
