Antibiotic resistance is one of the world’s greatest health threats. One particularly serious problem is infections linked to implanted medical devices such as hip and knee prostheses. Although these operations are very successful, infections can sometimes occur. These infections are difficult to treat because the bacteria form biofilms, which make them resistant to both antibiotics and the immune system. For patients, this can mean long-term pain, repeated surgeries, and reduced quality of life.
In my group, we study multidrug-resistant staphylococci, which are a common cause of these infections. We investigate how they spread in hospitals, how they survive on implants, and how we can improve diagnosis and treatment. We also collaborate internationally and take a “One Health” perspective, studying similarities between bacteria found in humans and animals.
I teach infectious diseases in the medical programme (terms 3, 5, and 8). I am responsible for the medical program’s clinical education in infectious diseases within Region Jämtland Härjedalen and also serve as coordinator for term 8 in Östersund.
