Sara Strandberg

I am associate professor and senior consultant in radiology and nuclear medicine. My research is focused on validation of diagnostic imaging methods, in particular within the field of hybrid imaging.

I have a combined employment as associate professor and senior consultant in radiology and nuclear medicine at Umeå University/University Hospital of Umeå. The main part of my pedagogical activities is in the MD program, but I also teach in the radiologic technology and medical physics programs. My clinical work emphasizes on oncologic radiology, with staging, re-staging and therapy response assessments. This is reflected in my research, which is mainly focused on validation of diagnostic imaging, in particular hybrid imaging methods within the field of nuclear medicine, such as PET/CT and PET/MRI.

During 1995-2001, I was a student myself at the MD program at Umeå University. Already as a student I gradually became interested in research and diagnostic imaging. In 2012, I finished my specialization in Diagnostic Radiology and later added another specialization in Nuclear Medicine, at the University Hospital of Umeå. Being employed at a university hospital, continuous educational activities for medical students has been a regular and appreciated part of the work. With time, my educational involvement increased, in parallel with my academic research development. In 2015 I was admitted as a PhD student at the Department of Radiation Sciences, Umeå University, and obtained my PhD degree in 2020 with my thesis ”11C-acetate-PET/CT in primary staging of high-risk prostate cancer”. My current research is focused on the additional value of diagnostic imaging in various malignancies such as prostate cancer and gyneacological cancers, and in certain non-oncological diseases as well.

The identification of imaging biomarkers is of particular interest to allow quantification of prognostic information. Such structured information may be useful for the development of future AI decision support tools.
