Zia holds a master’s degree in applied mathematics from the Institute of Space Technology in Islamabad, Pakistan, where his thesis was centered on bifurcation analysis of nonlinear dynamical systems. Additionally, he has conducted research on cell signaling using dynamic modeling and information-theoretic techniques while working as a researcher in the Systems Biology and Informatics Lab at the Institute of Fundamental Technological Research, Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw, Poland.

In 2020, Zia was selected to join Henrik Sjödin's lab as a PhD student, where he is currently conducting research on predictive modelling of the spread of various infectious diseases, including COVID-19, West Nile virus, and Dengue. Utilizing advanced machine learning algorithms and explainable AI, in addition to conventional process-based models, Zia is developing new data-driven methods to assess the outbreak severity of novel diseases more accurately. Moreover, he is creating a new framework to identify climate change and human mobility in the global expansion of dengue.

It is also worth mentioning that Zia is a valued member of the Lancet Countdown Europe team, which is responsible for developing risk indicators for emerging infectious diseases such as West Nile virus and Dengue.
