Campus: The university has two campuses; its main campus is located in Sapporo and the second one is in Hakodate.
Student life: There are more than 250 student clubs and associations to engage in, encompassing several areas of interest: sports, traditional Japanese culture, music, dance and recreation. The university also has its own museum and arranges festivals.

Hokkaido University was ranked no.22 in the world and no.7 in Japan by the QS World University Rankings 2018. In 2015, Reuters included the organisation in the world's top 100 most innovative universities.

About Sapporo

Sapporo is the third largest city in Japan in terms of area and the fifth largest in terms of population, with a population of almost 2 million people. Sapporo is the capital of Hokkaido Island and is described as a modern city. The climate is similar to the climate in Sweden - warm, humid summers and cold, snowy winters. Every year, the Sapporo Snow Festival is arranged, attracting over 2 million visitors.

HUSTEP: Cannot take graduate-level courses. 
JLCSP: Must take courses related to Japanese language or culture.
SAS Undergraduate: School of Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Dental Medicine, Graduate level Agriculture and Pharmaceutical Sciences has limitation because of highly specialised field of studies.

Available exchange programmes: Not all students that apply get accepted.
HUSTEP & JLCSP: Undergraduate only
SAS: Both Undergraduate and Graduate
SRS: Graduate

HUSTEP programme offers courses in English while Japanese is the language of instruction for the other programmes.

Important note regarding HUSTEP: Students must have completed at least two years of undergraduate study at their own university prior to arrival in Japan and be enrolled in a full-time undergraduate degree program.

Important note regarding JLCSP: The Japanese Language and Culture Studies Program (JLCSP) is a “junior year abroad” type program for undergraduate students majoring in Japanese language and culture. Only Japanese language or culture related fields are allowed.

Important note regarding SAS: Special Audit Student. Preferably native level Japanese.

Important note regarding SRS: Special Research Student. Student is assigned to a graduate school to engage in their research under supervision of their instructor, working with regular students from same study field.

Full time studies (corresponding to 30 hp): 14 credits (HUSTEP program)

Course types: 1–2 credits/course

Course levels:
2000: undergraduate level class (basic)
3000: undergraduate level class (advanced)
5000: graduate level class (basic)
6000: graduate level class (advanced). HUSTEP students may take classes on all levels.

Student grants and loans for studies outside of Sweden

You may be entitled to student grants and loans from CSN when studying abroad.

As the cost of living and accommodation may be higher abroad, you can apply for an extra loan known as an additional loan for studies abroad.

You can also apply for an additional loan to cover additional costs, i.e. travel and insurance costs.
