Alex Körnegård

I had my first studio at the art academy for two years. As a byproduct of my creative process, a synthetic earth floor took shape. Traces of my work pressed together in several layers of paint, spread across the gray concrete, along with dust from pulverized oil paint and remnants of linen and rabbit skin glue.

The synthetic earth floor possesses a spontaneity that is difficult to achieve in painting, as it is shaped by intuitive additions over time. Despite this, the composition of the floor has become an ideal for how I envision my painting should function. Creating a dynamic surface that is almost monochrome requires careful attention to detail and continuous work. I add and subtract paint to form layers in the painting that allow moments of transparency. The viewer becomes an archaeologist, but without the need to search; time causes the layers to vibrate through each other.
