The application for the national Swedish 7T MR facility was granted funding from the Swedish research council (VR) in October 2010. Applicants were representing universities in Lund, Umeå, Uppsala, Linköping and Gothenburg, as well as the Karolinska Institute.

In February 2012 the contract with the vendor (Philips) was undersigned by Lund university (equipment), Region Skåne (buildings) and the vendor. The scanner was delivered in the beginning of December 2014 and is placed centrally at Skåne university hospital, Lund.

The high signal-to-noise ratio obtained at ultra-high field can be utilized to obtain higher resolution images and to observe weak signals that would otherwise be buried in the noise.
