Modular railbus
This was a five-week school project exploring the future of public transport interiors. Europe’s Rail, a body of the European Union, tasked us to create an interior for their new autonomous railbus. The infrastructure of rail travel is mostly in place but is underutilised, using the rail would make public transport more accessible in rural areas for people who are dependent on car travel. The rail bus offers a minimal carbon footprint; it outperforms all other ways of propulsion-driven travel. The goal for this project was to inspire more people to ride the railbus instead of other means of travel. We looked at who currently uses public transport – and who doesn’t, but also the reasons why. We explored ways to make rail buses more relevant by making the travel time more meaningful. Our design proposal utilises zones, each with a tailored interior that applies to users’ different necessities.
