It is very important that you, as a tenant, fulfill your obligations before moving out. These include departure cleaning and returning your keys. If the room is not cleaned properly, the Housing Office will charge you for the cleaning costs. This ensures that we can continue to provide housing for future international students.
Before you move out, you must:
Clean the room thoroughly
Make sure that all furniture and fittings are in the same condition as when you moved in
Remove any personal or additional furniture you may have added We kindly ask you to follow the instructions carefully to ensure a smooth move-out process.
Cleaning equipment required
Broom and dustpan or vacuum cleaner
Mop with bucket (traditional mop), or a flat-head mop that can be used dry or damp
Window/shower scraper
Microfiber cloths
Toilet brush
All-purpose cleaning liquid
Window cleaning liquid (or water with a few drops of dishwashing liquid)
Toilet cleaning liquid
General
Remove all personal belongings from the room
Sort any waste (plastic, metal, cardboard, etc.) and dispose of it in the designated waste rooms after cleaning
Use clean microfiber cloths when cleaning
Kitchen / Kitchenette
Empty and wipe all kitchen cupboards
Empty and wipe shelves in the refrigerator and freezer
Defrost the freezer if there is heavy ice build-up
Hallway
Empty and wipe shelves in wardrobes or cupboards
Remove marks or adhesive residue from walls and doors, including door handles
Wipe around skirting boards and light switches
Bedroom
Wipe all flat surfaces, furniture, and the air ventilation casing
Wipe down the inside of the window using a window scraper, window cleaning liquid and a clean microfiber cloth
Remove any marks or adhesive residue from walls
Empty and wipe inside closets and drawers
Dust chairs and armchairs
Wipe around skirting boards and light switches
Leave the mattress, duvet, and pillow on the bed
Bathroom
You can use only a microfiber cloth with water, or with all-purpose cleaning liquid if necessary (extra dirty).
Wipe the bathroom lamp
Empty and clean the bathroom cupboard (inside and outside)
Wipe the mirror
Clean the sink, faucet, and underside, including visible pipes
Wipe the shower walls and rinse with water
Wipe the shower tap
Clean the shower drain and remove any clogging
Leave the shower curtain
Wipe the outside of the toilet
Wipe between the toilet seat and the back, and where the toilet meets the floor
Wipe the inside of the bowl thoroughly using a toilet brush
Last but not least
Vacuum or sweep all floors
Mop all floors, with a damp mop
Please check off each item as you complete the cleaning. Make sure you leave the accommodation in good condition.
Returning your keys
Your keys must be returned no later than the date and time stated in your contract. If the keys are not returned on time, the lock to your room will be changed at your expense. We strongly recommend that you return the keys in person, as it is common for keys to be forgotten when handed over to a friend.
Keys can be returned:
Directly to Infocenter at Universum, or
By placing them in the grey mailbox outside the Aula Nordica entrance, marked “IHO”
If you use the mailbox, put the keys in an envelope with your name only – nothing else.
