Marburg Virus Disease: First Outbreak Faced in Rwanda
Talare: Dr. Leopold Bitunguhari, Internal Medicine Physician, University of Rwanda & University Teaching Hospital of Kigali
In 2024, Rwanda experienced its first outbreak of Marburg Virus Disease (MVD). Among the 66 reported cases, over 75% were healthcare workers. MVD, caused by the Marburg virus, leads to severe hemorrhagic fever, similar to Ebola.
Dr. Leopold Bitunguhari provided frontline care to MVD patients at the University Teaching Hospital of Kigali, one of the hospitals directly affected by the outbreak.
This seminar is part of the ongoing collaboration between the University of Rwanda (UR) and the Faculty of Medicine at Umeå University, founded on a 2024 Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen exchange and collaboration in teaching and research.
