Ralph Schroeder, University of Oxford håller i seminariet:

AI and Social Theory

Abstract
This talk will outline how social theory can be advanced using AI approaches. First, it will define AI and spell out the conditions for such theory advances, which include various data sources that allow the dynamics of different systems to be modelled. Then it is necessary to establish the relationships between systems and sub-systems. These ideas are illustrated at the hand of several examples. One example is geopolitics and state breakdown. Another is the subsystem of media within the political system and how media agendas feed political agendas. Other examples can be sketched, such as how the techno-scientific transformation of the natural environment imposes constraints on future economic growth. What are the obstacles to theory development with AI? One is the low degree of theoretical integration in the social sciences. Another is combining different data sources in unified accounts of micro-interaction and macro- social change. The conclusion spells out the implications of machine-generated and digital data-driven learning for cumulative knowledge advances in social science.
