Innehåll

The course addresses tourism development in rural and peripheral areas. Initially focus is on demand for rural and peripheral tourism acknowledging not least image of a rural idyll. Moreover the role of infrastructure and rural tourism supply are discussed. Special emphasis is given to various forms of tourism such as nature-based tourism, second home tourism and indigenous tourism. Practical studies of rural tourism enterprises and destinations further contribute to improve the students’ under¬standing of rural tourism development.

Förväntade studieresultat

After completing the course the student should be able to - distinguish various forms of tourism in rural and peripheral areas, - assess the role of tourism for various rural and peripheral areas, - accomplish qualified analyses of tourism development in rural and peripheral areas, and - design strategies for developing tourism in rural and peripheral areas.

Behörighetskrav

Univ: 120 ECTS, 60 ECTS of which in human geography or equivalently. Basic requirements for university studies in English equivalent to English A from Swedish Upper Secondary School.

Undervisningens upplägg

The teaching consists of lectures, individual supervision and seminars. The seminars are compulsory. Relevant gender aspects will be dealt with during the course. Relevant gender issues related to the contents are continuously integrated in the course. The teaching is in English.

Examination

The course is examined by two individual, compulsory assignments to be presented at seminars and in written reports. The assignments and the whole course are graded according to the scale A – FX. Examination based on the same syllabus as at the ordinary examination is guaranteed during two years after the first registration to the course. It is not possible to appeal against a received grade, i.e. to get it examined by a higher authority, but a student can always criticize the grading or ask another examiner to reconsider the examination. When a student has failed an examination on two occasions, he or she has a right to have another grading teacher. A written request for an alternative examiner should be handed in to the director of studies. ACADEMIC CREDIT TRANSFER Credit transfer is always examined individually.
