Innehåll

The course gives an overview of Sweden’s social geography. The course includes the country’s special features with regard to political geography as well as social geography. The population characteristics, the settlement patterns and migration, and how this has changed over time are aspects of the social geography of Sweden. Other themes are the country’s political and administrative structures, influx of foreign ideas and values, and basic knowledge about gender equality.

Förväntade studieresultat

After completing the course the student should have knowledge of - the population, its concentration and the flows of migration in the country as well as migration to foreign countries, - the settlement patterns and how it has evolved over time, - the political system and the country’s administrative structures, - the social welfare system, - the influx of foreign ideas and values, - basic knowledge about gender equality in Sweden.

Undervisningens upplägg

The teaching consists of lectures, group work and/or excursions. Group work and excursions are compulsory. Lectures will be spread all along the course. Group work will take place in the second and third week. A short excursion in the Umeå region will be made during the first part of the course.

Examination

Students are required to document and present results of their group work. They are also required to pass a written examination. Students who fail the scheduled examination have the right to re-sit the examination a couple of weeks later. The general system is U for fail, G for pass and VG for pass with distinction. Upon request students may receive the grades A-FX. A student who has failed two consecutive examinations has the right to get another examiner unless there are specific reasons against this (HF Ch.6 §11B). Students are not permitted to retake an exam they have already passed in order to attempt to raise their grade. ACADEMIC CREDIT TRANSFER Credit transfer is always examined individually.
