This course gives an introduction to basic concepts and theories within the field of urban and regional planning. Furthermore, the course aims to apply spatial concepts and theories on the practise of planning. Geographical information systems (GIS) are an important part of the course. The planning themes during the course highlight fields like participatory planning, negotiation planning and urban design but also ambitions to manage risk and vulnerability in planning situations. One major point of departure is the intersection between time and space expressed as the concept of time-geography. For students who are not familiar with GIS the course starts with an short introduction and for students who need to refresh the planning vocabulary the course starts with an introduction to planning.
After completing the course the student should be able to - give details on basic concepts and theories within the field of urban and regional planning, - apply spatial concepts, theories and geographical perspectives on actual planning situations, - apply geographical information systems (GIS) on actual planning situations, - analyze and discuss concrete planning issues from different planning theory perspectives, - critically evaluate a real planning project and also independently and from a given standpoint formulate a circulation for comments (remiss) or comparable document, - conduct a smaller investigation and present this in written form as well as orally, - problematize the planning process from a gender perspective.
Univ: 120 ECTS, 60 ECTS of which in a major field of subject, including 7,5 ECTS in quantitative methods, or equivalently. Basic requirements for university studies in English equivalent to English A from Swedish Upper Secondary School.
The course is based on lectures, seminars and group exercises. Some of the group exercises are in the form of practical field work while others are more theoretical. Relevant gender issues related to the contents are continuously integrated in the course. The course is given in English.
A number of individual and group exercises are included in the course. The course is examined by participating in compulsory exercises (seminars and group tasks) and passed written examination (reports and final exam). The course grade is based on joint judgement of the individuals performance during the course. Normally, a grade above passed also requires that written reports are delivered as scheduled. Students who fail the scheduled final examination have the right to re-sit the examination soon afterwards. Examination based on the same syllabus as at the ordinary examination is guaranteed during two years after the first registration to the course. Students who have passed an examination cannot redo the examination to receive a higher grade. It is not possible to appeal against a received grade, i.e. to get it examined by a higher authority, but a student can always criticize the grading or ask another examiner to reconsider the examination. When a student has failed an examination on two occasions, he or she has a right to have another grading teacher. A written request for an alternative examiner should be handed to the director of studies. ACADEMIC CREDIT TRANSFER Credit transfer is always examined individually.
