About the Centre for Principal Development

The Centre for Principal Development has long-standing experience and broad expertise in the field of educational leadership. Since its establishment in 1993, we have provided training for school leaders, politicians, and police officers, and have organised seminar activities for chief education officers and local education policymakers. We also conduct extensive research within the educational sciences, with a particular focus on school leadership in its broadest sense

The Centre for Principal Development is an independent unit within the Department of Political Science. We offer training primarily for principals, organise well-regarded seminars and conferences within the field, and maintain an active research environment. Our highly qualified instructors come from a range of academic disciplines and are also active researchers. A particular strength of our training provision is therefore the close connection to extensive research in the educational sciences.

The Centre for Principal Development at Umeå University is one of seven higher education institutions commissioned to deliver the national School Leadership Training Programme (Rektorsprogrammet) for the period 2021–2027. We have long-standing experience of the programme and continue to educate principals and assistant principals. We deliver the programme in the northernmost part of Sweden as well as in the region of Skåne.
