Umeå University is a world leading university in machine learning and artificial intelligence. The two-year programme is aimed at students with a bachelor's degree in computing science. Experience snow, aurora borealis, dog sledding, fishing, hiking, rafting, Sami culture and the midnight sun with your fellow students.

The Master's programme gives you a broad knowledge of artificial intelligence and in-depth knowledge in one of five profile areas of your choice. The first four profiles lead to a Master's degree in Computer Science with a specialisation in Artificial Intelligence. The Data Science profile leads to a Master's degree in Mathematical Statistics.

The profile areas are

Reasoning and decision making
The profile covers theories and formal methods for knowledge representation, reasoning, decision-making and planning. These methods are used, for example, to develop autonomous, intelligent systems and business intelligence systems in industry and healthcare.

Human-AI interaction
You will study courses that cover human-AI collaboration, multi-agent systems, socially intelligent systems, theories of humans as agents in activity, and ethical, legal and social aspects to be considered during the development of AI. The knowledge taught in this track is essential for developing future digital agents, intelligent environments and new ways for humans to collaborate with AI-based systems in industry.

Intelligent Robotics
The Intelligent Robotics profile teaches you to create applications for intelligent robots that can navigate complex environments, interact with humans in a natural way, and understand and process visual and linguistic information. The profile provides you with an in-depth understanding of how robots can be used to solve real-world problems and improve human performance.

Machine learning
This profile addresses machine learning methods such as Bayesian methods, support vector machines, reinforcement learning, logistic regression, deep learning and their applications. The knowledge conveyed in this track is necessary to be able to apply relevant and effective machine learning solutions to real-world problems, such as text analysis, classification, prediction and image analysis.

Data Science
The profile, that leads to a degree in mathematical statistics, focuses on methods for managing and analysing large data sets using statistical tools. In industry, there are many applications of data science, where data management skills are crucial. For example, data science can be used in the manufacturing industry or the energy sector to manage large amounts of data and extract valuable information that can be used to improve productivity and efficiency.

The programme in short

First, you will take three compulsory AI courses, Fundamentals of AI, AI and its Methods and Applications, and Machine Learning.

In addition, all students take a course in either mathematical statistics or formal logic. You then take profile-specific courses that in the end shape your programme.

Learn more about the Master's programme in Artificial Intelligence by visiting our education page. There is a link on the webpage that leads you direct to the programme's application form.

You will also find more information about the prerequisites that we set and syllabus for the entire programme.

The department is home to internationally recognised researchers who teach courses in the master's programme.

Below you will find a video where some of them talk about the programme.
