The Role of Language in Challenging Times: Minority, Majority and Educational perspectives

Welcome to the next national symposium for ASLA, the Swedish Association of Applied Linguistics, which will be held on 7–8 maj 2026 hosted by the Department of Language Studies.

The theme of the symposium is – The Role of Language in Challenging Times: Minority, Majority and Educational Perspectives – which can be interpreted widely. Contributions within applied linguistics that are not directly linked to this theme are also welcome. Apart from regular individual papers, the symposium includes four plenary presentations, panel discussions, symposia and poster presentations.

Submission of abstracts

Abstracts for conference presentations should be submitted to:

Abstract submission

The abstracts should be a maximum of 300 words (excluding references). They should clearly state:

  • aim
  • methods
  • previous research/theory
  • (expected) results of the study.

We welcome proposals for presentations in the following forms:

Individual presentation

Duration: 20 minutes presentation + 5 minutes discussion.

Poster Presentations

Poster Quality: Ensure high-resolution and readable design.
Discussion: Time will be allocated for interaction with other participants.

Symposia

Structure: 3–4 presentations and one symposium moderator (may also be a presenter).
Abstracts: One abstract per presentation, all to be submitted for review.
Moderator Role: Oversees the session and facilitates discussion.

Panel Discussions

Format: 30-minute themed discussion.
Participants: 1–2 moderators, up to 6 panelists.
Submission Requirements: Proposed theme, brief description of content, names of moderators and participants.

The final deadline for submission of abstracts is 1 October 2025.

Presentations can be held in Swedish, Danish, Norwegian or English.

The symposium will take place in Umeå, Sweden.

15 December 2025: Decision on abstracts sent by this date  
1 January 2026: Conference registration begins  
1 March 2026: Final day for Early bird registration  
1 April 2026: Final day for registration  
7–8 May 2026: ASLA Symposium takes place

ASLA – The Swedish Association for Applied Linguistics

ASLA is the Swedish branch of the international association of applied linguistics, AILA (Association internationale de linguistique appliquée). ASLA’s aim is to promote research concerning practical problems to do with language, facilitate contacts between language researchers in Sweden and other countries and encourage participation in AILA’s research networks.
