Annika Helene Schwarz

Student at the Master's Programme in Marketing.

What made you interested in applying to the programme here in Umeå?
I have always been super interested in studying in Sweden especially because of their high level of education. Furthermore, I wanted to gain more experiences aboard meet people from different countries. For Umeå specifically, I chose it because of its location, the quality of education, and because of the student life. Living here in the north of Sweden is an experience I haven’t had before and wouldn’t want to miss out on. I even got to see the Northern Lights! The university and the campus offer so many benefits and create a very nice familiar environment that I am not used to from university studies in Germany. At the University, there are a variety of student corners, cafes, restaurants, and much more. We even have a small lake on campus where you can ice skate in the winter.

What is it that you like with the programme so far?
What I particularly like about my programme is the practical approach. In every course, we work together in small groups with students from various countries. By addressing the theoretical content in parallel with practical approaches, the learning outcomes is much greater. Furthermore, the student-teacher relationship is very personal. Here at the Umeå University, we work together rather than against each other. The professors support us in every aspect and are very empathetic.

What is the most interesting thing you have learnt in your programme so far?
I had the opportunity, as part of my course, to develop a marketing plan for a company with my group and act as a consultant. Through this course, I was able to gain many new experiences and insights into the daily life of a marketing consultant.

What do you like to do in Umeå during your free time?
In Umeå, there are so many things to do, and the best part is that you almost always run into someone you know. Especially now in winter, I love snowboarding, cross-country skiing, or ice skating. But my favorite thing is meeting friends for “Fika”. The buddy programme also always has a lot to offer and is a great way to meet new friends. Whether it’s a barbecue night, volleyball tournaments, ice hockey game or just fun evenings at Oleary’s, there’s always something going on.

What advice would you give to a student thinking of applying to this programme?
Be brave and be ready to embrace something new. Especially in your first weeks here try to meet as many new people as possible, have fun und don’t let your personal life suffer. You will have one of your best experiences here for sure and you will not regret it!

What are your plans after graduation?
After completing my degree, I would like to work as a strategic consultant in the field of marketing and management for one of the top companies in Germany.

Three words to summarize your time in Umeå?
Unique, unforgettable, and enriching
