Inuit and Sámi women’s environmental engagement in a digital context Laëtitia Marc
Climate change is affecting both Inuit and Sámi livelihoods and cultures. In the digital space, women from the Arctic are taking the lead in speaking up about those issues through political discourses, art, and social media.
In this presentation, I start by introducing the digital methodology used for my doctoral research, and I offer a brief overview of the Inuit and the Sámi digital context. Then, I demonstrate how the digital can be a space for engagement, but also a mode of engagement itself. I develop several examples of Inuit and Sámi engagement in a digital context, such as the #sealfie campaign and the Fosen movement.
Moreover, I discuss how Inuit and Sámi Women appropriate a space dominated by non-indigenous environmental discourses, by contributing to the making of a digital indigeneity, and a global indigenous discourse about climate change. Finally, I share some insights on the differences between Inuit women’s and Sámi women’s environmental engagement.
