Time Thursday 25 April, 2024 at 17:00 - 19:00
Place Auditorium, Umeå School of Architecture

Umeå School of Architecture invites to a round-table discussion on "Embracing the Leftovers" with Susanne Brorson, Benedikt Hartl and Maja Hallén. The event is part of the public event series UMA Talks.

Our lives are very wasteful and we are creating an increasingly toxic environment around us. How can we deal with our own waste that we no longer accept or want to deal with? Can we build in a climate-responsive way with leftovers and write our own stories for a new social and ecological future? Various approaches are proposed, from dressing buildings with bio-based materials, reusing materials and activating spaces on the border between fiction and reality, to working directly with people to communicate their needs. Architects not only serve their clients, but become activists and facilitators in developing thought-provoking ideas and new processes for living with all our leftovers in new ways, and giving new value to what we think is no longer needed.

Susanne Brorson is an architect, researcher and university teacher based on the Baltic island of Rügen. She is exploring local climate-responsive and resource-conscious architecture involving 1:1 experimentation.

Benedikt Hartl is a wannabe architect and daydreamer based in Munich, Germany. He is founder of the activist architecture office OPPOSITE OFFICE .

Maja Hallén is an architect based in Umeå. Her work is focused on participatory processes and  community development in various scales often in a rural context.

About the event:
The event, held in English, will begin with a welcoming introduction by Julio Diarte Almada, Assistant professor at Umeå School of Architecture (UMA). After the introduction a discussion will follow with Susanne Brorson, Benedikt Hartl and Maja Hallén moderated by Constanze Hirt, lecturer at UMA.
