Doctoral studies

The Faculty of Arts and Humanities have PhD studies in twenty different areas. Every year we have between twenty and thirty PhD students receiving their diplomas.

General information

Doctoral education involves four years of full-time study, which includes a number of courses and a thesis. Besides acquiring in-depth knowledge of a field of study, you will also cultivate your critical and analytical thinking. During your education you get to solve problems independently as you prepare for a professional career within academia, business or the public sector. To be accepted as a doctoral student you are required:

  • to fulfil the entrance qualifications for the subject in question.
  • to show that you have other abilities that are necessary to complete the education.

If you are interested in commencing doctoral education at Umeå University you should first look for current vacancies via the Open positions, and then contact the directors of doctoral studies in the department that conducts education and research in your field of interest.

The Admissions Code for doctoral education contains the rules that Umeå University adheres to for application, qualification and selection. More information can be found in the Swedish National Agency for Higher Education's pages for Doctoral studies. There you will find more detailed information and links to the current legislation that regulates postgraduate studies at Swedish universities.
