162 laps around the Earth powered by solar energy on campus

NEWS On the roofs of many of the buildings where you attend lectures, study, and meet other students, there are solar panels. Over the past twelve months, the installations on Campus Umeå and at the Umeå Marine Sciences Centre in Norrbyn have produced enough energy for 185,000 sauna sessions.

Solar panels are installed on several campus buildings, including the Biology Building, Chemistry Building, Physiology Building, KBC Building, Natural Sciences Building, Technology Building, MIT Building, Social Sciences Building, Humanities Building, Teacher Education Building and Aurora. They are one example of how the campus is being developed through local renewable energy production and more energy-efficient buildings.

“The energy we produce at Umeå University would be enough for approximately 185,000 sauna sessions, or to drive an electric car a distance equivalent to 162 laps around the Earth,” says Mikael Granholm, Property Engineer at Akademiska Hus. “Solar panels on our roofs are one of several measures that help create energy-efficient buildings, and by reducing the need for externally supplied energy, they make a real difference to the environment.”

Solar Energy in Numbers

  • 11,000 m² of solar panels on campus
  • 1,295 MWh of electricity generated over 12 months
  • Equivalent to the annual heating demand of around 65 detached houses or 219 apartments
  • Or approximately 185,000 sauna sessions
  • Or 162 laps around the Earth in an electric car

“Solar energy is an important part of both our buildings’ and the university’s energy and climate transition,” says Richard Olsson, Head of Property Management at Umeå University. “By increasing the production of renewable energy, we also contribute to the university’s climate and sustainability goals.”
