Umeå University is the third largest higher education institution in Sweden when it comes to the number or admitted students – 22,887 have been admitted to this autumn’s educations after the second selection. That is a 1 per cent increase in comparison to last year. The first choice applicants to programmes have also increased.
The number of admitted students is decreasing by 1 per cent in the country in comparison to last year, but Umeå continues to develop in the opposite direction. When the autumn term starts this week, 4,814 students to programmes and 18,073 students to courses are expected to begin their studies at Umeå University. In total, 22,887 have been admitted, which is a 1 per cent increase in comparison to last year. Umeå University thereby secures its third-place position when it comes to the number of admitted students in the country, after Stockholm and Uppsala universities.
“The fact that more students apply to Umeå University, serves as good proof that our efforts to improve the range of courses and programmes, as well as the quality of our educations have paid off. Seeing that more people are made aware of this part of the country is also a positive effect for the entire region,” says Anders Fällström, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of education at Umeå University.
The trend is also positive regarding the number of first choice applicants to programmes – this autumn, 10,330 students applied to programmes at Umeå University as their first choice. This can be compared with last year’s 10,068 and means an increase by nearly 3 per cent. As a result, the number of applicants per place increased from 1.97 to 2.04. Number of applicants per place can be defined as the number of first choice applicants divided by the number of admitted students.
On Monday 26 August, the autumn term starts for most students at the Umeå University courses and programmes. On Thursday 1 September at 10:00–14:30, the Student Welcome Fair will be held on Campus Umeå; in Universum and Lindell Hall. The interest in welcoming students is increasing year by year – this time, approximately 160 exhibitors from the University, student unions, the Municipality, companies and associations will participate.
“It’s important that all students feel welcome, both to Umeå and to the University. The Student Welcome Fair gives both returning and new students a chance to discover what the city has to offer and what it means to be a student at Umeå University,” says Anders Fällström.
