2nd place in Europe for international student experience

NEWS Social activities, teaching and sports facilities are highly ranked categories when international students respond to the International Student Barometer – a survey measuring how satisfied they are with studies at the university and living in Umeå.

International students from 129 higher education institutions in 17 countries responded to the International Student Barometer 2017 wave. The survey is divided into four main categories: Learning, Living, Support and Arrival, that respectively includes several subcategories.

Umeå University places first in Europe when it comes to sports facilities, social activities and Internet access. In the main category Learning, Umeå University places third in Europe which is an improvement from 2016 when the university took fifth place.

On the question of how satisfied students are with all aspects of their experience at the institution, Umeå University places second in Europe and third in the whole survey.

"The survey covers many matters that are important when international students choose a study destination. The fact that we take such a strong position in the students’ overall experience, confirms the work done at all levels within the university", says Ingrid Svensson, Head of Unit at the International Office.

In most cases, Umeå University outperform other universities in Europe in the main categories, but there are areas where the university and the city of Umeå is ranked low: possibility to open a bank account, find part time jobs and the living expenses.

"Some of the areas that are ranked poorly are not possible for us to influence, but then we need to get better at communicating to the students what they can expect when they come to Umeå", says Ingrid Svensson.
