450 new exchange students to arrive at Umeå University

NEWS “We are extremely pleased that Umeå University continues to be an attractive higher educational institution for international exchange students. Approximately 450 new students are expected to arrive for the start of the autumn term, which is similar to last year,” says Per A. Nilsson, International Office Director.

There is further evidence why Umeå University is a popular choice for students from abroad.

"For two consecutive years, foreign students have given Umeå University high marks in the International Student Barometer, an international questionnaire which measures student satisfaction," explains Per A. Nilsson.

The majority of new exchange students are expected to arrive in Umeå on Monday 29 August and Tuesday 30 August.

The International Office has arranged to meet the incoming students and provide transportation from Umeå Airport to Camus Umeå during these days.

At 1:00 pm on Tuesday 30 August, a four-day orientation course will begin. It consists of a series of lectures and activities that will help the new students become acquainted with life in Umeå and studies at the university.

Autumn 2011 students arriving on exchange agreements are from the following countries:

Austria: 14 Germany: 104 Poland: 15
Australia: 2 India: 2 Portugal: 2
Belgium: 11 Ireland: 17 Romania: 6
Brazil: 3 Italy: 23 Russia: 11
Canada: 12 Japan: 2 Spain: 25
China: 24 Lithuania: 2 Switzerland: 5
Czech Republic: 12 Latvia: 1 Taiwan: 2
Denmark: 11 Netherlands: 9 Turkey: 18
Finland: 17 New Zealand: 2 United Kingdom: 39
France: 60 Norway: 3 United States: 16

In addition to students arriving on exchange agreements, over 50 tuition paying international students will begin their studies at Umeå University. Autumn 2011 is the first academic term in which non-European students have been required to pay tuition fees for higher education studies in Sweden.

"We are pleased that it appears that we have reached the goals we set," says Anders Fällström, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Education at Umeå University. "It also seems that we have admitted more students than many comparable universities. However, it is a significant decline compared previous years. We need to substantially increase our target numbers, but also understand that a very lengthy process lies ahead. If Sweden is to approach to the number of international students who came before fees were introduced, then there must be new types of scholarship funding from the government.”
