All-time record high enrolment at Umeå University – can reach 32,000 by year end

NEWS A historic record has been set at Umeå University for the 2009 autumn academic term, as the total number of registered students has surpassed 31,000 for the first time ever. During the first two weeks of the autumn term, the total number of students has increased by 3,444, an increase of 12.9 per cent, in comparison with the same period last year.

“We are extremely pleased that so many have decided to study at Umeå University. We believe that the student enrolment figures can approach 32,000 by the end of the calendar year," says Göran Sandberg, a very satisfied vice-chancellor of Umeå University.

From the beginning of 2009 up to 14 September, Umeå University had 30,163 registered students at the undergraduate and master’s level and 1,193 at the postgraduate (doctoral) level. There are 31,356 registered students in total. Since registration continues to take place throughout the entire term, the total student figures are expected to elevate.

There are several factors behind the significant increase in student enrolment.

“The current labour market situation has resulted in more applications to study, and at the same time many remain enrolled in the expectation that the labour market situation will improve. We also have an unusually large number of secondary school aged pupils at the moment, but I also believe that our marketing efforts have contributed," says Göran Sandberg.
