ALS researchers take on ice cold challenge

NEWS On Friday 29 August at 15:00, the ALS research group at Umeå University will take on the “ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.” Over 20 researchers will dump buckets of ice water over their heads by the campus pond. A large audience is anticipated.

A phenomenon is spreading virally across social media sites in which participants pour buckets of ice cold water over their heads. It was started in the United States to raise awareness for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a rapidly progressive neurodegenerative disease.

The challenge involves someone daring another to be filmed having a bucket of ice water poured on their heads and challenging others to do the same. It is common that those nominated have 24 hours to accept the challenge or forfeit by making a donation to charity.

“Those of us in Umeå who are working on ALS research and in healthcare believe that the ‘ALS ice bucket challenge" has finally given this cruel disease the focus and attention it deserves” says Anna Wuolikainen, who was appointed as the representative of the ALS group at Umeå University for this initiative.  “We hope that increased awareness and attention leads to increased financial support for research and thus, improved treatment, care, and support to ALS patients and their families.”

The researchers believe that increased attention can also result in more people becoming aware of the disease and becoming interested in ALS research.

A large representation of the ALS group at a research meeting in Istanbul, Turkey, in spring 2014. The meeting was arranged by EFNS (European Federation of Neurological Societies) and ENS (European Neurological Society).

“Many have already demonstrated their support by accepting the challenge - now it's our turn,” continues Anna Wuolikainen with enthusiasm. “We hope to see as many as possible there to support us!”

Over twenty scientists from the ALS group will be ready to get soaked at the university pond on Friday. One researcher from Germany and one from Turkey, who are unable to attend the challenge in Umeå, will participate in their home countries.

Donations for research are encouraged

The researchers are hoping for a large audience and they hope many donate money to support ALS research and suggest the following organisations:

  • Ulla Carin Lindquist Foundation for ALS Research
    Plusgiro: 90 00 49-8

  • Neuroförbundet (Neuro Sweden for persons with neurological diseases or injuries and their relatives and friends)
SMS text message: neuro 26 100 to 72980 to donate SEK 100 to the ice bucket challenge fundraising

  • Hjärnfonden (The Swedish Brain Foundation)
SMS text message: ALS to 72901 to donate SEK 100.

The video will be published on the Ulla-Carin Lindquist Foundation for ALS Research YouTube channel page where it may be shared with others.
