When the Swedish men’s team won Olympic gold in the 4x10 km cross-country relay yesterday in Vancouver, the first leg was completed by Daniel Rickardsson, who four years ago graduated from the sport sciences programme at Umeå University.
28-year-old Daniel Rickardsson grew up in Iggesund in northern Sweden, resides in Östersund and competes for the Hudiksvalls IF ski team. He had his international breakthrough earlier this year when he on 7 January after winning the sixth-stage of the 10 km classic at the Tour de Ski event in Toblach, Italy.
Earlier during the 2010 Winter Olympic Games, Daniel Rickardsson has finished 23rd in the 30 km cross-country pursuit and 22nd in the 15 km freestyle. On Sunday, 28 February, he has the chance for another medal when the men's 50 km mass start classical is held.
Umeå University sends big congratulations to Daniel and the other members of the relay team on their Olympic gold medal!
Umeå University aims to make it easier for elite athletes who want to combine top-level sports and studies. One example is the sport sciences programme (with Swedish language instruction). Another is the investment going towards the Elite Ski Centre at the Umeå Sport Sciences Centre.
