“Professor Cathrine Norberg has a broad and solid experience from several management and leadership positions in academia and will be a strong addition to the management at Umeå University,” says Vice-Chancellor Hans Adolfsson. “We are very pleased with the recruitment and anticipate welcoming Cathrine Norberg to Umeå University.”

Professor Norberg has held assignments at Luleå University of Technology as head of the then Department of Language and Culture (2007-2010), dean of the Faculty of Philosophy (2013-2018), and has been Pro Vice-Chancellor at the same institution since 1 July 2018.

Cathrine Norberg has a vast knowledge of the university and higher education sector through her assignment as vice-chancellor, and she has several national assignments. Norberg is, among other things, a member of the association of Swedish Higher Education Institutions’ expert group for teacher education and vice-chair of the teacher education convention.

Furthermore, Cathrine Norberg is well acquainted with first and second cycle level education as a teacher and former faculty programme director, and she has participated as an assessor and advisor in several of the Swedish Higher Education Authority’s evaluations of higher education quality assurance systems.

“I am delighted and honoured to have the opportunity to work at Umeå University, a comprehensive university with a wide range of high-quality education,” says Cathrine Norberg. “Umeå University has a very good reputation, both nationally and internationally, for the breadth and competence of its teachers and students. I have a bachelor’s degree from Umeå, and I am looking forward to coming back and being part of a strong educational and research environment.”

Cathrine Norberg replaces Professor Heidi Hansson, who will step down as Deputy Vice-Chancellor on 31 December 2022.

The term of office for Vice-Chancellor Hans Adolfsson, Pro-Vice-Chancellor Katrine Riklund and Deputy Vice-Chancellor Dieter Müller runs until 30 June 2025. Cathrine Norberg's assignment is valid until 31 December 2025 to ensure continuity in the university management. The assignment also includes collaboration and internationalisation in education on the first and second cycle level.
