Award-winning research sheds light on oral bacterial interactions

NEWS Jan Oscarsson, a researcher in odontology at Umeå University, and colleagues at Karolinska Institutet have been awarded the prestigious IADR/AADOCR William J. Gies Award in the category of Biological Research. The award recognizes the best papers published in the Journal of Dental Research during the previous year.

It is both an honour and a source of inspiration

“It is both an honour and a source of inspiration to see our research recognized in this way,” says Jan Oscarsson, researcher at the Department of Odontology, Umeå University.

The award-winning paper, Aggregatibacter aphrophilus T6SS Effectors in Host-Bacterial Interactions, reveals how bacteria in the oral cavity compete with one another and interact with the body's own cells. The findings provide new insights into the bacterial processes underlying diseases of the tissues that support the teeth and may, in the long term, contribute to new ways of preventing or treating periodontitis.

The study was carried out in collaboration between researchers at Umeå University and Karolinska Institutet.

The award includes a prize of USD 1,000 and a commemorative plaque.

The award is named after William J. Gies, founder of the Journal of Dental Research, and is presented annually to the authors of the best scientific papers published in the journal.
