Caroline Sjöberg named new University Director

NEWS Caroline Sjöberg will become the new University Director at Umeå University and will formally begin on 1 June. She has previously worked as head of the Swedish National Agency for Higher Education Services and was most recently associated with The Leadership Foundation for Higher Education in London.

“We are very pleased to have recruited Caroline Sjöberg,” says Lena Gustafsson, Vice-Chancellor of Umeå University. “Her prior broad experience has given her valuable knowledge of the higher education community and a wide network of contacts - both nationally and internationally. She has also been a very skilled and popular leader in previous managerial positions, and her commitment and communication skills are unquestionable. I very much look forward to working closely with Caroline in the management of Umeå University.”

The University Director is the chief administrative manager at Umeå University. The work responsibility is conducted with a balance between academia and politics. Caroline Sjöberg will be included in the Vice-Chancellor’s management team, and will be responsible for regulatory affairs and the university's entire operational support. Additionally, the role of the University Director involves many contacts, both within the university and externally with government authorities, departments, agencies and organizations.

“I am eagerly looking forward to becoming University Director,” says Caroline Sjöberg. “As a head at VHS and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), I have collaborated with Umeå University and received a very good impression. It is an attractive and comprehensive institution that is modern and innovative. The work will be very exciting.”

Caroline Sjöberg earned a bachelor’s degree in human resources at Lund University and has participated in and led numerous leadership management training courses. She has previously been employed as director of personnel at both Uppsala University and SLU. At SLU, she continued her career as Deputy University Director. In 2010, she began as director at the Swedish National Agency for Higher Education Services (VHS), the agency formerly responsible for admission and selection to Swedish universities and colleges. Caroline Sjöberg moved to London when VHS was merged into a new agency, the Swedish Council for Higher Education (UHR).  Since May 2013, she has been a consultant affiliated with The Leadership Foundation for Higher Education in the United Kingdom. During this period, she has been in contact with the Swedish higher education sector, including as a member of the university board at Mid Sweden University.

Caroline Sjöberg will succeed Lars Lustig, who resigned as University Director at Umeå University on 13 July 2013 to become County Director of the County Administrative Board of Västerbotten.
