Designer visits master's program in Human-Computer Interaction

NEWS Arranging meetings with professionals is an important part of education at the department of informatics. Students on the master's program in Human-Computer Interaction recently met Anders Malmströmer, an experienced and successful graphical designer.

One of the challenges for students on the master's program in Human-Computer Interaction is to study design from a theoretical as well as a practical perspective. Anders Malmströmer's guest lecture provided good insights into the different steps associated with the process when a designer is trying to meet the expectations of customers.

Being able to formulate the problem as well as the needs is crucial. What is the designer supposed to do? What is the target group and what feelings should the design try to create? All these questions were touched upon by Malmströmer during his talk about the process ranging from the first brief, development of moodboards to the final design and potential production.

With examples from companies such as Unilever, one of world's largest provider of consumables, and the oil company BP, Anders Malmströmer showed how a company's graphical design is based on a very conscious and deliberate strategy regarding which feelings they want to create for their customers.

– It is very important to find the right tone of voice, explains Malmströmer showing how both Unilever and BP tries to communicate environmental awareness and sustainability in their logos

Together with students the session was continued by discussions regarding digital aspects of design, for example, Apple's new design and the importance of designing interaction in digital products and services in a good way.
