Expansion of Campus Umeå area planned

NEWS Umeå Municipality is currently working towards a new layout plan for the area around Campus Umeå and Norrlands University Hospital. The vision is to build more housing units, activity locales and green park sites in neighbourhood sites near Umeå University’s main campus.

A phase of this project plan has already begun. The street Gösta Skoglunds väg, situated between Universum and IKSU Sport, has a more urbane character after a complete renovation. The area between Umeå East Station (railway) and Campus Umeå, has been reconstructed with a new bus terminal, a pedestrian and bicycle path, and a better connection between the railway station, hospital and main campus.

In the new layout plan– which is open for comments and feedback up to 31 March 2012 – a proposal has been presented for a consolidation and new housing units around the entire campus. In addition to new traffic patterns, there are plans for the construction of new housing units or other operational facilities:

• Housing units and activity locales at Hamrinsberget • Additional housing units/locales between Lilljansberget and Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) / Campus Track & Field Arena area that connects to Nydalahöjden• A new housing area between Tomtebo and Ålidhöjd – Nydala stad (Nydala Town)• Additional housing units/locales in the area beween Ålidhem, Norrlands University Hosptial and Campus Umeå
• A coherent green area (grass lot) between Stadsliden and Nydala Lake

According to planning documents, the aim is to create a new neighborhood city centre, with a coherent network of streets where several traffic patterns unite. More residents in the area are expected to make the whole area more accessible and alive, even outside of working hours.
