NEWS The Department of Geography prioritises AI Literacy for all students

At the Department of Geography, we work actively to prepare our students for a labour market in constant transformation. As part of this effort, we offered all students a unique workshop series on generative artificial intelligence (AI) at the beginning of the spring semester.

The technology behind generative AI is developing rapidly and has become an increasingly valuable resource for both learning and societal development. By giving all our students a shared point of departure, we support a more informed and methodical use of digital tools throughout their studies and in their future professional lives.

Focus on understanding and ethics

The workshops, led by Satish Strömberg from Humlab, introduced students to key aspects of the technology:

  • Fundamental understanding: How AI models function and are trained.
Practical application: How the formulation of prompts directly shapes the outcomes.
  • Critical engagement: How the technology can be used and evaluated responsibly.
  • Method and ethics: Reflection on the ethical and methodological issues raised by AI.

The initiative is grounded in the principles of AI Literacy. The aim is to ensure that our students acquire sufficient knowledge to use and critically assess the technology during their studies and in their future professional roles. By offering all our students the same introductory training, we respond to the growing need for contemporary expertise across academia, industry, and spatial planning.
