Future energy sources themed conference with prominent international speakers

NEWS Earth is facing an emerging energy crisis. In the foreseeable future the supply of fossil fuels, especially oil, will run out. This means that in future, we must rely on alternative energy sources. On Thursday and Friday, 12-13 February, the Chemical-Biological Centre (KBC) will be hosting a conference focusing on international research on energy for the future.

The conference is an important part of the university's investment in energy research.

“Future energy sources is a prioritised research area at Umeå University, says Göran Sandberg, university Vice-Chancellor.

The internationally respected guest speakers will provide both a broad and deep perspective on the current state of knowledge areas of hydrogen production, alternative fuels and artificial photosynthesis and its future applications.

The sun is one of our most important energy sources in the future. Every hour, solar energy reaches the earth, which globally represents the annual consumption of energy. The plants store the light energy in the form of organic material, such as wood, with only about 1-2 per cent efficiency. If we could reproduce and improve the process of photosynthesis so that energy is stored and transformed in a more efficient way than the plants themselves, our energy problems would be resolved for eternity.

The conference takes place 12-13 February in the KBC-Building (Chemical-Biological Centre), room KB3B1.
