Global Business in Focus as Former IKEA CEO Visits Umeå
NEWS
How do you lead organisations through change in an era shaped by digitalisation, AI, sustainability demands and global uncertainty? These were some of the key questions explored when Umeå School of Business, Economics and Statistics (USBE) alumnus Jon Abrahamsson Ring returned to Umeå to meet students, university staff and representatives from the business community.
Jon Abrahamsson Ring graduated from Umeå School of Business, Economics and Statistics at Umeå University in 1998 and has since held senior leadership positions at several international companies. Over a total of 18 years, he served as CEO of Filippa K, Plantagen and Inter IKEA. He currently works as a Senior Advisor at Blackstone, the world’s largest private equity firm, and holds several board positions.
Speaking to a full auditorium of 220 students, Jon shared experiences from his career and reflections on leadership in a changing world. The students’ response was very positive. They described the lecture as inspiring and motivating, particularly appreciating Jon’s practical advice, personal experiences and engaging, well-structured delivery. Many also found it especially inspiring to see a former USBE student go on to build an international career at the highest level.

Find your purpose, something you truly believe in and are passionate about
A recurring theme throughout the lecture was the importance of finding a clear sense of purpose and doing work you genuinely care about. Jon encouraged students to seize opportunities when they arise, dare to follow their dreams and seek out organisations whose values align with their own. Other key messages included the importance of self-leadership, curiosity and the ability to solve problems independently. According to Jon, it is important to keep developing and learning from others while remaining confident in your own strengths and staying true to who you are.
– Find your purpose, something you truly believe in and are passionate about. Stay curious, dare to seize opportunities when they arise, and build on the strengths that have brought you to where you are today. Being purpose-driven has always worked well for me; I don’t do anything I don’t believe in, says Jon.
Jon also spoke about how technologies such as AI are quickly becoming a natural part of working life rather than a competitive advantage in themselves. He argued that future success will still depend on people's ability to create value, solve problems, lead themselves and turn knowledge into action.
Later that day, Jon met with representatives from Umeå's business community to share perspectives on growth, transformation and long-term value creation. The event included a panel discussion with representatives from USBE and the local business community, focusing on topics such as corporate culture, sustainability, investment and business development. The day concluded with networking opportunities and informal discussions.
– I really enjoyed coming back to Umeå, seeing how the university has developed and meeting so many engaged and talented students, faculty members, representatives from the local business community and some old friends, Jon concludes.
