Inaugural weekend with royal splendor at Umeå Arts Campus

The opening weekend of the 2014 European Capital of Culture year, during 31 January and 2 February, offered tremendous delight. Umeå University welcomed over 160 guests on Saturday at Umeå Arts Campus. Among the guests were Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel.
Vice-Chancellor Lena Gustafsson greeted all attendees a warm welcome. Bildmuseet Director Katarina Pierre guided the royal couple around the museum for contemporary art and visual culture. Julia Ternström, Director of Studies, presented the Umeå School of Architecture together with students and colleagues. Thereafter, Anna Valtonen, Rector at Umeå Institute of Design, accompanied Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel on a tour where they met students who presented various design concepts.
"When we said goodbye to the royal couple for their flight on Sunday, they expressed gratitude for all the events that took place during the three days they were in Umeå," says Mats-Rune Begström, Director of the County Adminstrative Board of Västerbotten. "The Crown Princess was very happy with the programme and everything that she was able to experience"
Among the guests at Umeå Arts Campus were representatives from the European Commission, the Swedish government, county councils, ambassadors, cultural institutions and businesses. The programme for the esteemed guests also included tours of Umeå Academy of Fine Arts and Humlab.
