Industrial leaders meet academia at the 6th Cloud Control Workshop

The 6th Cloud Control Workshop attracted over 70 participants when held at the 7th IEEE Conference on Cloud and Utility Computing (UCC 2014) in London, UK on December 8, 2014. For the first time in the workshop series, it was open to the public and to contributed papers, as opposed to previously being by invitation only and limited in size.
The Cloud Control Workshops are aimed to foster multidisciplinary research in cloud management, leveraging expertise in areas such as autonomic computing, control theory, distributed systems, energy management, machine learning, mathematical statistics, performance modeling, systems management, etc.
The workshop included 3 highly-recognized keynotes speakers, 6 contributed presentations, and an industrial panel discussion.

“In technology research with mainly industrial applications, there is a great interest to learn and receive feedback from research being done at the major industrial players”, says Professor Erik Elmroth, Chair and founder of the Cloud Control Workshop Series.
The first keynote presentation was given by Adrian Cockcroft, Battery Ventures, US (previously Netflix), who addressed the issues of speeding up the development of cloud native applications and how to make applications run as cost-efficiently as possible on public clouds using autonomic capacity management.
John Wilkes, Google, US, gave the second keynote, sharing his view on control issues in warehouse-scale computing. With a starting point in the question “What could possibly go wrong?” he addressed the challenges in designing autonomic management system at massive scale and complexity. The final keynote was given by Ant Rowstron, Microsoft Research, UK. Ant discussed emerging hardware trends and the benefits of cloud infrastructure designed at the rack-scale, the latter illustrated by a rack-scale storage solution, substantially reducing power and operation costs.
The workshop was concluded by an industrial panel discussion, addressing questions about key future research topics and what type of research is best performed in industry or academia. The panel included the three keynotes and Joe Butler, Intel Labs, Ireland, and was moderated by Johan Eker, Ericsson Research, Sweden.
