International master’s student named "Global Swede"

NEWS Carlos Martin Jara Herrera, master’s degree student at Umeå School of Business and Economics, will be attending the “Global Swede” diploma ceremony in Stockholm on 7 May. He will receive this special recognition for visiting scholars in the area of innovation and entrepreneurship, for having chosen Sweden as his destination for higher education.

The prestigious ceremony will be held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Stockholm. Ewa Björling, Swedish Minister for Trade, will be hosting the event.

“My first reaction after hearing of my nomination was how proud my family would be,” says Martin, who will be completing his MSc degree in Business Development and Internationalisation next month.

He wrote his degree thesis on the topic of “Networking through Social Networks.” He has also been invited as guest lecturer on the topic of "Entrepreneur Students" for a Business Development class.

Martin will now be a part of the growing Global Swede Network for ambitious and creative people from all over the world with special ties to Sweden. A total of 25 international students at Swedish universities will be attending this year’s ceremony, the second group of Global Swedes. “In my nomination letter, I expressed how I wanted to build a bridge between Sweden and the Americas,” says Martin.

Martin was born in Ecuador, grew up in Brazil, and has an extensive list of international experience. In 2008, he earned a bachelor’s degree in International Relations at the University of Belgrano in Buenos Aires, Argentina. His work experience includes traineeships at Ogilvy & Mather in Costa Rica and New York City, and he is the co-founder and creative director of the Love & Lust movement marketing venture, launched in 2011 in Umeå, Sweden.
