International symposium on bacterial cell biology and pathogenesis

NEWS Two of Umeå University’s highly respected research centres, Umeå Centre for Microbial Research (UCMR) and the Laboratory for Molecular Infection Medicine Sweden (MIMS), are hosting a major international symposium during 14-18 June.

Nearly 250 researchers will meet for five days at the Aula Nordica auditorium on the Umeå University campus to discuss new recent research in bacterial cell shape and division, bacterial envelope biogenesis and surface organelle structure and function, protein transport, bacteria, host cell interactions and host immune defence mechanisms. The symposium lectures and poster sessions will run in parallel with workshops for junior researchers.

The symposium participants come from countries including: Canada, United Kingdom, United States, Mexico, India, Israel, Italy, Portugal, France, Germany, Hungary, Denmark, Finland and Sweden.

The symposium will encompass the latest research developments in a broad range of subjects including bacterial cell shape and division, bacterial envelope biogenesis including structure, function and the presence of surface organelles, protein transport and secretion, bacteria-host cell interactions and host immune defence mechanisms. Each of these topics will be covered by expert opinion from invited local, national and international researchers.

”Our infections research is among the areas of excellence in research at Umeå University and attracts top-level researchers to Umeå for more than just conferences. During the past two years we have received tremendous support with external research grants which has enabled us to recruit new researchers and develop UCMR and MIMS,” says Bernt Eric Uhlin, chairman of the organizing committee and scientific coordinator for the two new research centres.

Even the exotic midnight sun of northern Sweden will even be highlighted during the conference. Professor Thomas J. Silhavy from Princeton University (USA) will hold a ”Midnight Sun Seminar” on Wednesday 17 June, 11 pm till midnight.

In addition to the daily scientific sessions, the organising committee has arranged a series of workshops that are mainly intended for junior researchers. Microscopic techniques relevant to the study of microbial systems will be demonstrated.

The symposium received financial support from the Swedish Research Council, Umeå University, Nordic Research Board (NordForsk), Swedish Foundation for International Cooperation in Research and Higher Education (STINT), European Virtual Institute for Functional Genomics of Bacterial Pathogens - EuroPathoGenomics (EPG), and the Department of Molecular Biology at Umeå University.
