More online teaching and increased distance in halls

NEWS According to the new national COVID measures that took effect on 12 January it is still a priority to conduct university teaching and examination on site. At the same time, Umeå University is increasing its use of online teaching and similar alternative methods to decrease physical gatherings.

Due to the seriousness of the current situation, some teaching will now be converted to digital formats, particularly lectures with a large number of participants. This with the aim to provide more room for the students and staff who must be on site to conduct lab sessions or exams, for instance. How this will take place and to what extent is up to each education to decide. Students with queries are welcome to contact their departments.

When it comes to lectures and other teaching on site, the principle of leaving every other chair empty is now reintroduced to increase the distance between people in lecture halls.

Hall examinations

Umeå University continues to enable written hall exams with risk-reducing measures in place, in accordance with national recommendations. For hall exams, Umeå University is following the guidelines issued by the Department of Communicable Disease Control and Prevention at Region Västerbotten when it comes to distance and other routines, and adapt when guidelines change.

“We are currently in the middle of an intense examination period where many courses are carrying out exams. This means that it is particularly important that everyone takes their responsibility. Students who feel sick or have mild symptoms must not take their exam, but must instead wait until the next session to reduce the risk of spreading infection,” says Hans Adolfsson, Vice-Chancellor of Umeå University.

Students who cannot participate in a compulsory course component due to illness or symptoms are guaranteed a place at the next opportunity.

Still important to maintain distance

It is still important that everyone continues to maintain distance to others, and to stay at home and get tested in the event of symptoms arising.

Vaccination is the best protection

The best way of protecting yourself against severe COVID-19 is to get vaccinated. Region Västerbotten has now reduced the recommended interval between dose two and three. Hence, the third dose can be administered already after five months, instead of six. You can get vaccinated on Campus Umeå or book an appointment at your nearest healthcare centre.
