Moving towards gender equality: 14 of 23 newly installed professors are women

NEWS Today, Umeå University is formally installing 23 new professors at the Annual Autumn Academic Ceremony. More than half of these new professors are women.

In 2012, there were slightly under a quarter of female professors employed at Umeå University. This year, the share has increased to 27 per cent, although there is still a long way to promote gender equality. Approximately 60 per cent of the new professors to be installed at Umeå University's annual autumn ceremony in 2013 are women.

"The fact that there are more female professors women at Umeå is a welcome step towards a gender balance," says Lena Gustafsson, Vice-Chancellor of Umeå University. "It is also important that we develop our work to accelerate the achievement forward. Gender equality is crucial and central to the University's development and quality."

One of the new professors is Ann Öhman - Umeå University's second professor of gender studies and former director of the Umeå Centre for Gender Studies. Six of the 14 female professors who are to be installed have worked closely with the Umeå Centre for Gender Studies.

"We have a unique breadth in Gender Studies at Umeå University in an international perspective," says Anna Croon Fors, Director of the Umeå Centre for Gender Studies. "Our gender research is interdisciplinary and is present in all faculties . That so many of the female professors who installed this year related to the field of gender studies indicate that there is a vital and important topic."

In addition, Malin Sund has also been installed as professor in 2013. She is the first woman in Sweden to be a university professor of surgery.
