New creative study areas at the University Library

Today, a new study area named Learning Space UB had an official opening at the Umeå University Library. Silent reading areas and traditional bookshelves have been replaced with comfortable, colourful furniture that can be easily moved from one place to another.
The University Library is a popular working place for students at Umeå University, and it has now received a major addition to further meet the needs of students. Learning Space UB is the name of the new area that includes inviting, movable furniture and modern, easily-accessible technology. The venue can serve as a place for group work, self-studying or be quickly arranged for a lecture in any part of the room.
The opening was attended by nearly 200 students and staff and included speeches from Anders Fällström, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Eduation and Mikael Sjögren, University Library Director.
“We hope that Learning Space UB will be a flexible learning environment that suits the needs of our students,” said Mikael Sjögren. “Individuals or groups, both large and small, should know that they are free to rearrange the furniture as they wish.”
The ambition is that Learning Space UB will become a place where students enjoy attending and feel free to return to whenever they want to study. The venue is intended to be inviting and to encourage learning. The interior design has been collaboration among the Department of Informatics, Umeå-based company Input, and the University Library.
Presentation Studio
The opening of the Presentation Studio (Presentationsstudio AB) also took place at the University Library. The studio is available for students, faculty and staff at Umeå University and is a place to practice giving oral presentations and public speeches. The recording technology in the studio allows for students to take part and analyse the results, and also makes it possible to send files in several formats to others.
