NEWS Umeå Municipality and the real estate company Balticgruppen have reached an agreement on 24 March to construct a “cultural meeting building” by the riverfront area in central Umeå. The new complex will be an important aspect in the cultural corridor that extends eastward down the river to Umeå Arts Campus of Umeå University.

The project covers a large part of the city area called Heimdal, situated between Storgatan and Strangatan, and the riverfront wharf area in the centre of Umeå. The modern structure will include a hotel, restaurant, gourmet food market, commerce, open space (square), both outdoors and indoors - and about 15,000 square meters is reserved for various kinds of cultural activities. The goal is for the complex to be completed before the end of the year in 2013 and to formally open in 2014, when Umeå will be the European Capital of Culture.
